aam panna/ mango drink

Aam Panna/ Mango Drink is a refreshing Summer drink made by first boiling Raw Mangoes and later spices are added to it. This is a popular Summer drink in India that is also considered as a Summer Cooler.

It is a very popular North-Indian drink. One sip of Aam Panna/Mango Drink will rejuvenate you. This is made of raw (green) mangoes or can also be made using unripe ones. But it tastes better if made with the green mangoes.

You can serve it hot or cold. I like it both ways. I always drink a cup of hot Aam Panna when I make it, as it's very hard or impossible to resist. You can also serve it cold with some ice cubes and fresh mint leaves.

This is my favorite drink, apart from Chai. I remember when I used to come from school, my Mom used to serve it with lunch. Still remember those wonderful childhood memories. Summers in India are horrible, as temperature shoots up the roof. So Aam Panna/ Mango Drink works like a charm and helps you to cool down in an instant. WHICH MANGOES TO USE?

This is basically a mango drink, so you can make using any mangoes. But it tastes best when you make using Raw Mangoes. These are small-sized green mangoes that are very sour in taste. That sourness, when combined with different flavors like mint, roasted cumin powder, rock salt & sugar, etc., gives a very distinctive flavor.

These raw mangoes are very hard to get and not available in all the stores. So sometimes I also make using unripe mangoes too. I add lemon juice when using unripe mangoes to bring a similar taste.

TIPS TO REMEMBER  FOR MAKING AAM PANNA

  • First and foremost, use small-size raw mangoes. If you can't find raw mangoes then you can also use the most unripe mangoes you can find. Also if using unripe mangoes, then try to find the ones that have less hair.
  • When boiling the mangoes, you can boil whole mangoes. Or you can cut the mangoes first and add the pieces for boiling.
  • For sweetness, I have added sugar. But you can also add Honey, Maple Syrup, or Jaggery.
  • For a refreshing taste, I always add some fresh mint leaves. And later grind them with the boiled mango pieces.
  • If mangoes are not tangy or sour in flavor, then add lemon juice to the Aam Panna/Mango Drink.

Notes

It's best if you use raw mangoes for making Aam Panna / Mango Drink as they give tangy flavor. But you can still make using unripe mangoes too.
You can either boil the whole mangoes and taker take the skin off. Or you can first peel the mangoes and add the slices while boiling.
If mangoes are not tangy, you can add some lemon juice to bring the same flavor.
I always use fresh mint leaves, as they bring freshness and an aromatic flavor to the drink.
